Everything we do in our daily lives involves balance. The
better our sense of balance, the better we perform, whether
we are elite athletes or just average people going about our
daily activities.
Nature endows us with strength and balance when we are
young, and we seldom give that a second thought until the
day comes when we start to lose those capacities. While
strength and balance come naturally, they must be used on
a consistent basis to be maintained and/or challenged to be
improved. As we age, we tend to lose neuromuscular strength
and balance, mostly through inactivity. A diminished sense
of neuromuscular awareness, combined with bone density
loss caused by a lack of muscle use, will lead to falls, bone
fractures, loss of confidence and, in general, a lower quality of
active life.
